WHAT DO YOU DO TO ENERGIZE A GROUP?

A good answer for interview questions like this needs to focus on how you personally can impact group dynamics. The question can apply to management roles as well as to an individual contributor role within an organization. People like to hire team players -- and one can be a team player regardless of their specific role. Are you the team member who always has a new idea or strategy to be implemented? Maybe you're the one who notices the non-participants -- and draws them into your discussions. Maybe you use humor to get everyone relaxed and willing to participate. Are you the eternal optimist? Can you take negative energy and turn it around? Whatever your particular strength is along these lines should be shared.

TELL ME ABOUT A TIME WHEN YOU SEIZED OPPORTUNITY OR GRABBED SOMETHING AND RAN WITH IT YOURSELF.

We're looking for initiative here. Companies don't hire followers; they hire leaders. And leaders typically are at the forefront of taking initiative, recognizing problems that need solutions and taking it upon themselves to tackle the issue at hand. If you're any good at what you do, you'll have several examples of times when you've done this. It's fine to paint with a broad brush here and suggest that you have many examples of times when you've taken the initiative to get something done. But follow this up with a specific example or two. A good answer for interview questions like this requires that.

WHEN FACED WITH A DIFFICULT PROBLEM, WHAT DO YOU TEND TO DO?

Your answer will give insight into your problem solving skills, as well as your team orientation. You can inadvertently come off sounding like the lone ranger here, with lots of "I" statements -- or you can appear to be more collegial, getting input from others in the organization impacted by the problem, weigh the alternatives, test your conclusion and then implement your recommendation. You also need to be mindful of time frame. Usually, problems need to be solved in short order. So, whatever your strategy, make sure that there's a sense of urgency to getting the problem resolved.
